Sanatorium Merkurial is a collaborative project developed by Sanatorium of Sound, the experimental music festival based in Sokołowsko / Poland, and Merkurial, the artistic and publishing collective founded by Robert Piotrowicz and Jacek Sienkiewicz. It brings together highly individual artistic practices emerging from different musical and cultural contexts. These practices find common ground in the way they develop their own musical languages and address artistic challenges beyond the dominant narratives of the Western European avant-garde. A central concern of Sanatorium Merkurial is the changing condition of contemporary performance and, in particular, the affective dimension of abstract music — its capacity to operate through the body, intensity, tension and the relationship between performer and audience. Affect allows music to move beyond the autonomy of its formal structures and to acquire a different presence within social and political space. Merkurial refers directly to the idea of mercurial states — states of instability, transition and suspension between categories, where ambiguity and contradiction become deliberate choices rather than conditions to be resolved. Transformation becomes a goal in itself, allowing new forms and qualities to emerge. This expanded field allows musical abstraction to become at once a physical, cultural and social experience. Rather than proposing a unified aesthetic position, the programme brings together distinct artistic languages whose common ground lies not in stylistic similarity, but in the conditions of ambiguity, transformation and affect described above. The London concert marks the beginning of a new collaboration between Merkurial and IKLECTIK, creating a context in which these different artistic positions can be presented together. The collaboration reflects a shared interest in practices that resist fixed classifications and in forms of listening that emerge through encounters between sound, space, technology and the body. This project is co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland from the Culture Promotion Fund.
