Title: What they don’t tell you about schemes Speaker: Edward Young Abstract: I will give an introduction to scheme theory. We will see that the Zariski topology, very natural to an algebraist, has some rather counterintuitive quirks: open sets are dense and compact, nothing is Hausdorff, and there are more points and data than we know what to do with. In a series of examples, we will see how to tame some of these difficulties to produce a rich geometric theory.
