About

A lecture on the Foucault pendulum with a practical demonstration. In the mid-19th century, Jean Foucault used a pendulum to prove that the Earth rotates. In the water tower on Letná, we have one such pendulum. First we will examine it in detail, show the historical context, and try to find answers to possibly surprising questions. Why are the Malvinas called the Falklands today? Why didn’t the Poles win the relay at the Sydney Olympics? Why do hurricanes and typhoons rotate? Behind all of it stands a mysterious figure named Coriolis.
