Why did a daycare that started fining parents for picking up their kids late end up with *more* late parents? Why can paying people for blood reduce the supply? And why would it feel strange to pay a friend for helping you move, when nobody minds paying a moving company? In this session, we’ll examine what happens when something moves from the world of norms, favours and obligations into the world of prices. Sometimes a price makes a system work better. Sometimes it quietly changes what the thing is. **We’ll analyze:** * What changes when a social norm is replaced by a transaction? Why does a fine sometimes work as a fee? * Why does paying for a behaviour sometimes crowd out the motivation that produced it? * When does a price coordinate behaviour and reveal information well, and when does it distort what it measures? * What can be priced without losing its value, and what can’t? Think care, attention, friendship, votes. * How do platforms turn time, attention and relationships into tradable units, from gig work to dating apps? * What happens when people start treating themselves as assets to be optimized and marketed? * Once something becomes a market, can it go back? **Our approach** We analyze how systems work rather than debating what should be. This means examining incentive structures, motivation, and the social meaning of exchange to understand when prices help and when they backfire, without immediately reaching for moral judgment. This isn’t a debate about whether capitalism or markets are good or bad. We’re examining the machinery: what a price actually does to a relationship, a behaviour, or a person, and under what conditions. **Format:** * Guided discussion with clear analytical focus * \~120 minutes * Small group to ensure everyone can contribute **Note on RSVPs:** For small group discussions, each person matters. Not showing up without updating your RSVP results in: 1st = warning, 2nd = waitlist, 3rd = removal from group. Please cancel in advance if plans change.
