Bill Callahan, who built his own universe for years under the name Smog, is considered one of the most recognizable voices in alternative folk. He writes songs that don't steer, but invite: a quality that was already evident during his Smog period and has only become more refined since then. Callahan's recent work shows how true he has remained to that quiet, attentive way of writing. The American singer-songwriter performs at Melkweg. Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest During his Smog years, he developed a writing style that was simultaneously dry, sharp, and disarming: lyrics that could evoke an entire world with minimal means. That approach still forms the core of his work. In 'Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest,' he focuses on small, domestic moments, while 'Gold Record' feels like a series of observations by someone watching the world with quiet attention. What distinguishes Callahan is his ability to articulate the everyday without romanticizing it. His language remains clear and precise, with room for suggestion and humor. His strength lies in the phrasing, not the gesture, and it is precisely because of this that his songs linger long after.
