Worum es geht

Wird ins Deutsche übersetzt…

The French Revolution overthrew an absolute king and ended with an emperor. The Bolsheviks promised to abolish the state and built one of the most powerful states in history. The Reformation broke the Church’s monopoly on truth, and within a generation it was running its own heresy trials. Why does this keep happening? In this session, we’ll look at this pattern as a mechanism rather than a betrayal. The question isn’t “the leaders sold out.” It’s what happens structurally, psychologically, and in language when a movement goes from opposing power to holding it. **We’ll analyze:** * **Organization:** Why do growing movements need leaders, staff and money, and why do the leaders’ interests start to drift from the members’? (Michels’ “iron law of oligarchy”) * **Psychology:** If a movement is driven by resentment of an enemy, what happens once that enemy is gone? (Nietzsche’s ressentiment) * **Language:** How do slogans that once opened up debate harden into orthodoxy and loyalty tests? * Do the same people change once they win, or does a different kind of person rise to the top? * What do the exceptions look like? Did any movement win without becoming what it opposed, and what was different? * Is this inevitable, or are there conditions that prevent it? **Our approach** We analyze how systems work rather than debating what should be. We’ll start from historical cases before moving to recent ones, so we can see the mechanism before we have a stake in it. This isn’t about which movements were right or wrong, or about current party politics. We’re examining the machinery: what about winning changes a movement, and when it doesn’t. No preparation required. **Format:** * Guided discussion with clear analytical focus * \~120 minutes * Small group to ensure everyone can contribute **Note on RSVPs:** For small group discussions, each person matters. Not showing up without updating your RSVP results in: 1st = warning, 2nd = waitlist, 3rd = removal from group. Please cancel in advance if plans change.
